Trauma Informed Massage

Massage therapy is often used to help reduce pain and anxiety resulting from a trauma and it is common for clients to approach a Massage therapist for help. However, for people who have experienced trauma, touch can be foreign, threatening and reminding of past trauma. As a massage therapist, so much of what I do isn’t always focused on muscle adhesions, It’s about changing the nervous system via touch and relational skills, which are both equally capable of conveying care or re-traumatizing.

During my recent nursing career, I have provided care for people who have experienced trauma and learnt that showing care and compassion facilitates the client’s sense of safety, which is essential for creating an effective session. I use a method called Trusted Touch Therapy® which provides a compassionate, consensual and therapeutic experience to my clients.

This form of massage can be particularly beneficial for those who have experienced trauma, are lonely, touch-deprived, disabled, elderly, fragile or at the end of life.

I am happy to build a tailor-made care plan for you or your loved one dependent on your needs.

Massages can take place in your home, hospice or our clinic.

How massage can help you

Stress relief

Massage is an incredible tool for relieving pain associated with tight muscles and restriction in your joints.

It works in conjunction with your body’s nervous system to ease tension and help you and your muscles to relax. Massage can help you to decrease stress hormones, provide comfort, boost your mood and help you manage the side effects of stress and stress related conditions.

Injury and pain relief

Massage can also provide post-exercise relief, releasing soreness and muscle cramps and can increase your overall range of motion. Common injuries that can be treated with massage include:

  • Tendonitis
  • Ligament sprains
  • Muscle strains

Scarring and trauma

Massage is often used to treat old scar tissue and to prevent future scarring, as it removes waste materials from your body and brings nutrients to injured cells, helping to reduce swelling and inflammation.

Many people with trauma use massage therapies to take control of their emotions, receive human touch, and feel safe and respected. It can also promote an increased connection with your own body and help you to feel more yourself.
